Quick updates

Here is a quickie of sorts. I have finally fingured out where the spelling errors where on the right side of the page. They are now fixed. I have also been finsihed up the website for the Office of Learning Services at Millersville University (Link Here). I have finally figured out how to get onto the server to update the pages at PalmBible+ (Link Here) and so that site is now looking a lot more the way I would like to see it. I have also been working on a user manual for the PalmBible+ program (Link Here) and you can see that as I am working on it. Finally, I am able to get online via my Zire71 using some software called WebToGo (Link Here) so I may be able to access the means to update the blog on a more frequent basis. I am having fun with it now, and that means that I am killing my bill, but that is kool for now. I will handle that end as it needs be. But that is it. Still in the moving process and will be there for the rest of the summer. Stay tuned to the website as I will be creating a low bandwidth (read: smaller and fewer graphics) version of the site for mobile devices (I have to carry my website with me you know). In the meantime, stay rested and blessed. Peace.

It's Been a Week

Hello all;
It has been a week since I have last been on here, not so much because I have been busy, but becasue I have not had much to write about. I am entering into the end of a nice vacation time this month where I did not have much work to attend to, and where I have been able to spend some quality time with Kyera and other friends. I have enjoyed the amount of basketball that I have been able to play the last few weeks, as it feels that I am rounding into baksetball shape. This Tuesday, I will be picking up my bike from the bicycle shop. That will enable me to get some more work onto my legs and abs.

In other news, I am moving soon. Going back to Philly. That should be fun as I will be around my family for a few weeks. After a few weeks, I will return to Lancaster to work for a summer program at Millersville University called Upward Bound. There, I will be teaching website creation. I used to have a PDA course there, but this year that will not be happening. Less grades to worry about is not too much of a problem. But, it is a lot of fun to explore new technologies with those that have not played with PDAs before.

That is about it from me at this time. As usual, if there are any questions, errors, or comments, pleae send me an email, and I will get that issue addressed. Peace and blessings.

Mornings Are Not Mine

Hello all; I have to confess, I am not a fan of morning hours. Now let me clarify that, From 12 to 2 AM, I don't mind since I am already awake. But that 6 to 9 AM period, that has to be wrong. My body and I agree that getting up at that time is just too early, there is nothing going on, pollen is awake, and silly news people are perky. That cannot be a good time to get up. Nontheless, God has had me waking up at 6:30AM for a few weeks now. Until this week, I really had nothing to do in the morning, since my business contacts are all asleep. So this week I have started working out. I am doing the warmup stretches that I used to do when I took martial arts. That much is a blast from the past. I am also doing the circuit from my track days at Millersville U. That includes pushups, situps and dips. Now, I haven't done these in a long while, so I am not doing the 1 miute for each, I am more like 25 pushups, 50 situps, and 30 dips. That all takes a bit more than a minute each. But, I am so out of shape. I used to be able to knock those out.

But, that is my morning; devotions for about a half an hour and then another workout. Overall, that is about an hour of getting myself ready for the day. That can't be a reason to wake up, but it has become mine. I so don't like mornings, you can have them. But for me, they are just not for me.

Life Lessons: I am God's Best

Today I learned something: something like a lesson that I should have learned a long time ago; but I learned it today. It says simply:

"I am God’s best.” Meaning that even though I am not in heaven yet; and even though I have not gotten thru everything that I will come to; God has designed me to be the best person for the things that I will go thru and He has the confidence in me to make it thru those things and eventually get to Him. I cannot be dismayed by the things that I have missed, but I have to be encouraged that even though I missed them, God has given me a chance to change. I am the best person to go thru what God has planned for me.

If you are reading this, you might not understand what it was to bring me to this point and that is ok. It makes more sense and value that I have made it to this point. It is an elementary lesson, but I am all about fundamentals anyway. That is where I make my ends, the basics. I hope that for you, that you will be able to grab a hold of whatever basic lesson that it is that God wants to get through to you as well. Peace.

Website Updates Day 2

Hello again, if you haven't noticed, I have updated the website some. I changed the background color, as well as combined the menu and title header into one flash file. The plan is to eventually get some descriptions of the sections within the white sections of the header-menu so that you would know more about what is going on with my website. The blog still remains, but I have tweaked the colors and fonts to make it easier to read and more align it with the rest of the changes. I do hope that you enjoy it.

I would ask that if you are having a problem viewing anything on this website, please send me an email. Peace and blessings.

Personal Message

This is a letter of sorts. I wanted to share it with you, at the same time, it will be a personal message to my girlfriend, my ladi, the friend whom I want to be around the rest of my life.

I tend to write best when my fears are realized
Those times when I see my future in your eyes
I tend to draw away into my heart
It is ok when you are there first
When you see that fear in my heart and you are a hug
There are not enough words
And for you I would do any and everything

You lie on my bed with your pain
And I cannot do anything
You lie there resting
I hope the pain has left you
I wish that I could be your Tylenol
And relieve it
The same way that you have done mine
You brought peace to my life where there was none
Where I once rejected love for pain
You opened me up to see my own scars
Then you massaged my back as I rested
I recovered and saw better
That you are everything I needed and more

Tonight you rest
And I had a small part
God has given you so much
And I just am glad that we can share this together
I know that I gave you only a few reasons
But there are 20 thousand more to share
And wrapped in each one
The sparkle of a diamond
Forever showing the radiance of our love.

New Program Review

Hello all, I have just finished my review of Facer, by PocketCraft. You can see the text of the review below. The review will be featured at BargainPDA.com and PocketCraft.com in the coming days (pending no problems with it of course). Enjoy.

Facer 2.02 Review by Antoine RJ Wright

A lot of times, when sequels arrive, they are met with a bit of disdain and some “been there, done that” kind of feeling. Most times, sequels are not new versions of the old, but are just refreshed versions with an added feature here or there. PocketCraft, the makers of the Facer application launcher/today screen, have thankfully created a sequel to the original version that does justice to the original, and becomes an original in its own right.

Opening Credits
Facer 1.x was a great idea. For some people who were transitioning from a PPC to a PalmOS device, the Today screen was a missing element. To some PalmOS users, the default launcher was just too bland, though efficient, to keep a person interested in their device. Facer 1.x ended with the scene of most users gaining the functionality of a today page, with the elegance of a themed launcher. It was the perfect match of form and simplicity that the PalmOS has exemplified for years. Then came the bugs, and feature requests, and newer devices that left Facer as a good, but not good enough launcher. Most reviews of Facer 1.9 ended with good, but just a bit too simple to be a real competitor to the other launchers out there.

Enter Facer 2.0.
PocketCraft had their mission out in front of them. To create a better launcher than Facer 1.9, but not overload it with unnecessary features and components that look good on paper, but would make the average user frustrated with trying to set it up. Facer 2.0 introduced users to a simplified plug-in system that would allow the user to place what they wanted on the today page. Instead of the simulated hi-res themes of 1.9, Facer 2.0 brought the realization of true hi-res themes and icons. This move did have the misfortune of leaving out some users; Facer 2.0 only works on OS5 devices and higher. But in moving to a new version, some people just have to move off the scene (PocketCraft says that this was done for easier technical support and feature integration).

So about those new features, what makes Facer 2.0 better than before?
• The Today page can be customized with different fonts (using Font Bucket)
• The Today page can display plug-ins from the date book, tasks list, and VersaMail (more plug-ins to come)
• The date book plug-in can show today’s and tomorrow’s appointments
• Icons are supported in the date and tasks views
• The launcher view shows 25 icons in the small icon view instead of 12 (in Facer 1.9)
• Facer 2.0 introduces enhanced sounds
• The favorite/recent apps bar can be minimized
• The launcher screen has a tap and old feature for most used functions
• And a very nice feature of being able to move around the actual elements per theme (coming soon on a revamped theme maker)

The Climax
Well, the proof has to be in the pudding, so to speak, with Facer 2.0. For me, it had to not just be a good sequel to the previous iteration; it had to also do better in some key areas. Where Facer 1.9 was lacking (a dynamic calendar, fading out appointments, and file management), I looked to see that Facer 2.0 would add to or make better what was already there.

In terms of the Today page, Facer 2.0 is a large step up from where it was. Even though at this point there are only three plug-ins (email, dates, and tasks), the plug-ins do show the ability of Facer to be personalized. I am sure that there are those that all that they need to see is the list of the days events (Date Book). Just using that pug-in will do fine. At the same time, you are given the option of looking at email, tasks, and dated events at the same time. This flexibility is one area where I give three out of four stars to PocketCraft. If developers would jump on the bandwagon faster, and create more plug-ins, this would definitely go up another notch.

On the other hand, trying to use Facer to manage past tasks and appointments is the same as in the previous version. Though Facer 2.0 gains the ability to fade out past appointments, and to view tomorrow’s appointments, it does this without taking into consideration that there might be other elements on the Today screen that deserve the same attention. For example, if you have seven appointments and five tasks, on a normal 320x320 device, you will have used up the available screen real estate. If you have the VersaMail plug-in installed, you will not be able to read if you have new mail unless you scroll down. This is a major no-no for usability’s sake. A today screen should have all of the information that you need right on that screen, without scrolling. In this respect, the original is much better. Facer 1.9 gave you the ability to see mail and other information using gadgets (a much better solution on a small screen). It is my hope that in a future update to Facer 2.0 that fading appointments and tasks and a smart resizing of the plug-in data can be included.

The other end where Facer 2.0 does not outshine its previous version is in the handling of files. Facer 2.0 does the same thing in just about every case. There is no integrated file manager with 2.0. You just can move, copy, delete and beam. That is it. Categorization is still there, but there is no longer the option to export categories to the default launcher. This basically means that if you ever have to delete and reinstall Facer, you will be left with having to categorize all of your applications again. At least all of the preference menus look nice. PocketCraft took a design element from Cobalt (PalmOS 6) and made the menus clearer and easier to go through. In other words, no more wading through pull down menus, for all are tabbed.

Overall, using Facer 2.0 hyped me up too much. I thought that with the many changes on the surface, that I would see much of the same just under the skin. That was not the case and therefore, this climax is much like every Terminator movie, dull and predictable. If Facer could add a decent file manager, and get out some of those kinks with the Today page, Facer 2.0 would have a surefire must see movie.

Late Additions
Before most movies come out, there is always some additional scenes that are either added or taken out. In this case with Facer, before I was able to finish this review, PocketCraft released version 2.04 of Facer which addressed some of Facer’s shortcomings. This release brought back gadgets, gives better D-pad navigation on the Today screen, improves the loading and working performance (much, much smoother), fixed the memory card issues some users complained about, and a few other additions. With this release, Facer has put itself on the breast of one of the must have launcher programs for the PalmOS.

There were also three themes bundled with this version that show how clean Facer is designed. The first one is OX-S, a knockoff of Mac’s OSX; it is done very well. The next is called Water. It has this island water feel to it. If you have ever been to a tropical place and remember seeing through the water, this theme captures that. The last one is called Sweet. It has this Valentine’s candy and love feel to it. It seems cheesier than the other two themes, but that might be because I am not as sweet as that theme would like. These three themes are a parts of two theme collections by PocketPixels.com. Both of the theme packs are available from the PocketCraft.com website (www.pocketcraft.com).

With that said, I think that I have to upgrade the Facer saga as a must see affair. PocketCraft has addressed the shortcomings very quickly, and this attention to their flagship program makes for a great program.

Facer can be downloaded from the PocketCraft website (www.pocketcraft.com). The trial version is good for 15 days. After that you are asked to register it for the price of $18.95. It sounds expensive if you compare it to other launchers, but that is only because you are getting the benefit of two programs in one, which tends to work very well in Facer’s case.

Heard Something Kool Today

Hello all;
It has been a while since I have written on here and I wanted to make sure that people who read my website know that I am still alive. I may not spell everything correctly, but I am here. I heard something today, more like read it because it was in an email sent to me. The statement said that "if you gonna pray, then don't worry." Man, that just hit me like a slap in the face. That statement means much to me becasue in this week, I have seen two students that I tutored about a year ago. The first was a young lady who had a little baby (she is 16 now) and is on the verge of getting married by the end of this month. She has already tested and passed for her high school diploma. That was great news. She is a really bright young lady and it is good to see her make something out of a hard situation. The other student was also in the same classroom as the first. He was a student that found it very hard to be motivated to do work. One of my tutors and I spent much one on one time with him in order to help him to understand that he had to buckle down and get work done. His other end in school was that he was easily distracted and his temper would come out easily. In talking with him tonight, he said that he was sent to another school (for hard to discipline students) and was then kicked out of the school after only four days (for fighting). I was ready to cry right there on the spot becasue this was a kid whom I thought turned the corner and was ready to make some great progress, only I am hearing the complete opposite. My heart is really turned soft for him; he has no male/father/big brother figures to talk to, and has only the street as a place of refuge. At 10:30pm I am walking into this kid. All I could do is shake my head. Getting home tonight and reading the email from my friend that just said to pray and not worry about things just set my heart free. Though I still care for this, and all my former students. I can't help but think that it was becasue that I heard something kool today, that I can pray and not worry about it, that really made my day end well. I do hope that in reading this that you too will keep your ears open during the day, I am sure that you will hear something that just may give you the right perspective to look at and move through life. Peace.
